As with any major destination around the world, there are precautions you should take, but overall, Istanbul has a very welcoming atmosphere with helpful locals and remains one of the most sought-after city destinations for travellers.
So thankfully the short answer is YES – Istanbul is generally a safe city for visitors.
Don’t just take our word for it though – let’s consult the statistics. In this post, we’ll explore how Istanbul’s safety compares to other major cities in the world, particularly in the West. We’ll also provide some practical tips to help you have a safe and enjoyable stay.

Additionally, Istanbul is equipped with over 150 public and private hospitals, many of which are internationally accredited, ensuring that tourists have access to high-quality healthcare in case of emergencies.
Practical safety tips for Istanbul
Even though Istanbul is statistically a safer city than many other city-break destinations, there are steps you can take to minimize risk, as you would on other travels.
1. Be aware of possible pick-pockets
Pick-pocketing can happen in any major city, especially in busy tourist areas. Keep your belongings secure, particularly in crowded places like the Grand Bazaar, Spice Market, or when using public transport such as the tram or ferries. Consider using a cross-body bag with a zip and avoid keeping valuable items in your pockets.
2. For private transport use official taxis
Istanbul has fabulous public transport these days – ferries, metro, trams and funicular – all of which we highly recommend. If you do need a private car then only take official yellow taxis with a ‘taksi’ sign on the roof and a built-in meter (newer ones have them integrated into the mirror). Their affiliation with a taxi stand/airport/hotel should be painted on the exterior bodywork.
Find them at taxi stands or flag one down anywhere in the city, but it’s best to avoid doing this in very touristy locations. Istanbul’s taxis are generally safe, but to avoid any potential issues make sure the meter is running, then reset before you start the journey and have small change with you to be able to give the exact fare.
3. Be cautious of common scams
As with many popular tourist destinations, scams targeting visitors can happen. You may meet overly-friendly locals inviting you to tea houses, bars or shops – where prices can be inflated. It’s best to politely decline unsolicited offers of help that has a financial implication, and always research before booking tours or making purchases.
A particular Istanbul speciality is when a shoe-shiner drops his brush on the street in front of you. Don’t pick it up! In thanks you’re likely to be given a seemingly complimentary shoe-shine which later turns out to be very expensive and difficult/embarrassing to avoid paying.
4. Respect local customs
Istanbul is a city that beautifully balances modern life with centuries-old traditions. Respecting local customs, particularly when visiting mosques or religious sites, not only enhances your experience but also helps you to blend in with local culture and receive respect in return.
How does Istanbul compare to other cities?
Istanbul has a reputation as a safe, family-friendly city and this is backed up by statistics. When comparing it to other popular Western tourist destinations, the numbers are reassuring:
- New York and London have higher violent crime rates, particularly in neighborhoods further from tourist hubs. Los Angeles and Rome also report more incidents of violent crime than Istanbul.
- In Paris, pick-pocketing is so frequent around tourist landmarks that local authorities have implemented special task forces to combat the issue. Istanbul has similar measures in place around crowded areas like Beyoğlu’s Istiklal and the Blue Mosque, but overall such crime against tourists remains unusual.
On the whole, Istanbul is seen as one of the safer major cities in Europe and the Middle East for tourists.
Does Istanbul feel friendly?
Beyond the numbers, the lived experience of Istanbul travellers speaks for itself. Visitors consistently describe the city as feeling friendly, welcoming, and full of life. Turkish hospitality is legendary and locals often go out of their way to help tourists with directions, recommendations, even translating when needed. We hear many stories of gratitude for kindness shown to our adventuring guests.
